Key Broke Inside Door Lock? Call a Locksmith

When a key breaks off inside a door lock, a number of problems arise. If the door was open when the key broke off inside the lock, you won’t be able to lock it and may not even be able to close it securely. If the door was closed when the key broke off inside the lock, you may be locked out of your home, business or vehicle. Whatever the specifics may be, this isn’t a situation that can be put on the back burner. It’s also not something that can be handled without professional help.

How Bad could it Be?

It’s natural to assume that you’re going to have to replace the entire lock after breaking a key off inside it. That’s especially true if the key is completely inside the lock. Even if part of the key is poking out, there’s no easy way to extract it. Before you replace the lock, you should contact an experienced locksmith. Finding locksmith services in NYC is easy, so you shouldn’t have to wait around for help to arrive. Without the right tools and experience, you can’t hope to extract the key yourself, and replacing the lock is a waste of money.

A Cost-Effective Solution

People often assume that it’s cheaper and easier to replace a door lock entirely than it is to call a locksmith. Nothing could be further from the truth. While there are locksmiths who charge far too much, there are plenty of honest, affordable locksmiths too. At any rate, you have to consider the time and effort that will be involved in replacing a door lock. By the time the job is done, you will have spent a lot of money and wasted a lot of time. A locksmith can repair the lock, extract the broken key and make you a new key quickly.

Residential Locksmiths

After all, the door is essentially unsecured when a key is broken off inside of it. The best residential locksmiths are available on a 24/7 basis. It’s wise to keep the number of a reputable and reliable residential locksmith handy for situations like these. Despite your best efforts, you could break a key off in a door lock on your home. If you do, knowing which company to call is very helpful.

Automotive Locksmiths

Although many cars have keyless entry these days, people still use keys to manually lock and unlock their doors all the time. If you do so and accidentally break your key off inside, you’ll need to get it extracted promptly. You may be out somewhere when this happens. Even if your car is in the driveway, you’re not going to want to leave it in that condition for long. Luckily, automotive locksmith services in NYC are easy to come by, and you should be able to get help right away.

Don’t Do it Yourself

If you’re relatively handy, you may be tempted to extract a broken key from a door lock yourself. This is generally not a good idea. For one thing, you’re not going to get far without the right tools. For another, you probably don’t have the experience that is needed to extract the key properly. You could actually cause even more damage. In the end, you could end up spending more money than you would have by contacting a locksmith right away. When a key breaks off in a door lock, the only thing to do is to call a locksmith.

I think everyone’s first instinct is to try to dig a broken key (or other foreign item) out of a lock. I guess you just feel like if you can manage to pull it out, you won’t have to shell out the money to pay someone else to do (even if they can do it more safely and quickly). And you know, the last thing you think about is causing damage to the lock itself.
